For the various challenges, we are allowed to add attachments that can also be up to 100mm longer than the base robot length (but same width). We’re going to take advantage of this for Dangly Too by adding “noses” that are tailored for the separate challenges and swap them out as needed.
Why?
Some challenges pose a problem with the rocking motion of Dangly Too, so we’re going to add a stabilizing wheel when necessary to limit this motion. To aid the turning motion overall, this will be an "omniwheel", which has multiple smaller wheels around a large one - magic!
Where we need additional capabilities, we’ll add this to the nose assembly, such as a grabber or extra sensors
We’ve started building a few to see how this approach is working. These are all made using a 3D printer in silver silk PLA material, and screwed together to make a bigger overall attachment:
We have now:
A Pi Noon nose with wheel and connector block
Eco Disaster nose with wheel and barrel scoop
Escape Route nose for mounting low-level wall detectors (to be decided)
We will need at lease two more:
Nerf gun nose for the Zombie Apocalypse shooter
A further nose for the Temple of Doom obstacle course, to prevent flipping upside down and allowing it to climb slopes more easily
For the moment, we don't think we'll need one for the Minesweeper challenge, but we'll see...
