Should we use a Pi5?

Just received our first, brand new shiny Raspberry Pi 5 with active cooling fan šŸ˜ƒ

But should we use it in our new Pi Wars robot Dangly Too?

  • Itā€™s new and exciting, of course we should use it šŸ˜ƒ

  • It has two camera ports, so we can get stereoscopic vision šŸ‘“

  • It is 2-3 times faster, allowing more image processing time šŸŽļø

Of course there are drawbacks

  • The latest PiOS might have issues, such as access to the cameras or running OpenCv for image capture and processing

  • It probably consumes more power

  • The fan may prevent existing Hats attaching to the GPIO easily, or blocking the air flow further

  • We have only one, thatā€™s a risk if we have an accident šŸ’„

And then there are other questions

  • Do we use the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operating system? Previously the 64-bit was faster but lacked support for some camera and Python packages we wanted to use. Has this been resolved?

  • Could we start with a Pi4 and switch later if needed?

Overall, weā€™re still undecided šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Will probably stick with the Pi4 for the moment, as weā€™ve already attached it and only need a single camera. But go with the latest PiOS which means we can switch easily later if we want to. Allows us time to play with the Pi5 separately and see how mature it is - perhaps even try out ROSā€¦
